Harmonics Filters / Harmonics Suppressors

At Sharda Capacitor, we manufacture and supply high-performance Harmonics Filters and Harmonics Suppressors designed to reduce the harmful effects of electrical harmonics in modern industrial systems. With growing use of non-linear loads such as VFDs, converters, computers, and electronic equipment, harmonic distortion has become a major concern for power quality.

Our harmonic filters are engineered to bring systems into compliance with IEEE STD 519 guidelines, ensuring efficient operation, reduced power losses, and extended equipment life. With successful supplies across India, Africa, Latin America, South East Asia, and Gulf countries, we provide customized harmonic solutions for global industries.

Introduction

Harmonics are integral multiples of the fundamental frequency that distort voltage and current waveforms. When harmonics enter the system, they can cause:

  • Increased kVA demand
  • Transformer overheating
  • Frequent capacitor failures
  • Erratic electricity meter readings
  • Overloaded neutral conductors and excessive N-G voltage

To address these issues, Sharda Harmonic Filters combine capacitors and reactors (tuned or detuned) to control distortion and stabilize power quality. Our reactors are built with 300% current carrying capacity and maintain stable performance with only 10–20% temperature rise above ambient conditions.

Causes of Harmonics
  • Non-linear loads such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), diode rectifiers, converters, voltage booster systems, and electronic devices
  • Pulsating current drawn by non-linear equipment
  • Voltage and frequency conversion equipment feeding harmonic currents back into the system
Types of Harmonic Filters
  • Tuned Harmonic Filters :Designed to filter out specific harmonic frequencies. Provide targeted reduction to prevent resonance.
  • Detuned Harmonic Filters :Shift the resonant frequency away from dominant harmonics. Prevent system resonance and improve overall stability.
Compliance with IEEE Standards

Our harmonic filters are designed to meet IEEE 519-1992 guidelines for current and voltage distortion.

  • Voltage Distortion Limits (IEEE 519-1992):
    • Below 69 kV: 3% (individual) / 5% (total)
    • 69 kV to 161 kV: 1.5% (individual) / 2.5% (total)
    • Above 161 kV: 1% (individual) / 1.5% (total)
  • Current Distortion Limits (IEEE 519-1992 – General Distribution): Depending on short circuit ratio (Isc/IL), maximum Total Demand Distortion (TDD) allowed ranges from 5% to 20%. Even harmonics are restricted to 5% of the allowable odd harmonic values.
